My decision that public relations was to be my choice of major happened last minute. Originally I had chosen communications, as I knew that I wanted to do something along the lines of marketing. However when a mentor explained to me that public relations was an option and focused more on event planning as well as the public image of a brand and crisis management, I was hooked. It was the perfect answer. I changed my major right before I moved into the dorms over summer.
I believed that I innately had the characteristics and interests necessary for the field of public relations. I considered myself to be social and extroverted. Perfect for the job. I loved the idea of working with social media. As long as I could remember I had been learning the ways of crissi communications and practicing it within my own personal relationships, trying to help resolve problems and get others to see a different perspective. My goal was always to resolve and understand. Most especially helping fix problems for other people.
Thankfully, as it is part of the generation I grew up with, I am very adept with social media content creation as well as keeping up with trends. I can also say that I have done well with nurturing my creative talent through childhood and into adulthood. Working for DÍG en Español, I got more than enough practice to put into action what I learn I learned in my media and design courses, such as using InDesign to create magazines and utilizing other apps such as Canva for different social media pages.
Classes I've taken that further prepared me for the field of public relations include: Interpersonal Communication, Social Media Communication, Mass Media and Society, News Writing and Ethics, Multimedia Storytelling, Principles of Public Relations, Media Design, Global News Media, Written Communication Public Relations, Strategic Communications Public Relations, Digital Tools Public Relations, Public Relations Management & Campaigns, Public Relation Case Studies, and Principles of Sociology. Not only did I learn the basics of public relations, but learning about society identification, human nature, and what is going on around the world is also very important when it comes to handling or avoiding potential crisis.
I have also won awards in my department relevant to public relations such as the JPR Award - Exceptional Achievement in Journalism & Public Relations. Check out my awards page to see more of my accomplishments. Which if you can't tell, just like my zodiac sign, the Capricorn, I have a very ambitious and driven character.
I feel very strongly about my ability to create and go through with campaigns, how to find and understand targeted audiences, trends, as well as handling and creating all kinds of media content. However, one thing I do not feel strongly about is in my ability to write press release statements; that is something I would need help on improving.
My ideal goal is to work in the entertainment industry. I always had a great love for Hollywood movies, celebrities, how film was made, the music industry, everything really. With this interest and passion I know that it will give me an advantage that I know the news and pop culture reference on almost every relevant celebrity (which come in handy on knowing who and what to avoid). I have also met several celebrities and since it is my goal to work with and for them, I know that I could be trusted to be professional around them. I also know that everyone deserves to have their own private lives, as I ironically like to live very private as well, which makes for another reason I could be trusted in the field.
I have also had a few experiences that are typical in Hollywood, so I unfortunately know the bad as much as the good, and I know how to put my foot down and when to walk away as well. I already learned not to put anyone on a pedestal and to treat everyone with the same respect, from a janitor to a beloved and well known actor.
Although I may have little professional experience on my resume, through my personal experiences and college education, I know I am ready to join the entertainment field, as my passion and drive will keep me sharp and on my feet. I'm proud of what knowledge and experience I do have, and I'm ready to show whoever accepts me into their company how much I can help them grow.
